Paulus, eigentlich Paul Schede, Dichter und Humanist, * Mellrichstadt 20. 12. 1539, ✝ Heidelberg 3. 2. 1602; Studium in Jena, Erfurt und ab 1560 in Wien, wo er 1561 von Ferdinand I. zum Dichter gekrönt und 1564 geadelt wurde. Über Prag und Wittenberg kam Melissus an den Hof des Bischofs von Würzburg; später wieder in Wien. Aufenthalte in diplomatischem Dienst in England, Frankreich und in der Schweiz, zuletzt Verwalter der Palatina in Heidelberg. Melissus verfasste kunstvolle neulateinische Liebesgedichte und führte als einer der Ersten das Sonett in die deutschen Dichtkunst ein. Von seinen in deutscher Sprache verfassten Gedichten sind nur fünf erhalten. Bedeutend ist auch seine Übersetzung der französischen Ausgabe der Psalmen von T. Beza und C. Marot (1572). Melissus war auch Komponist.
